Our Heritage

Adélard LangevinAdélard Langevin, Archbishop of St. Boniface, Manitoba, inspired by a compassionate zeal for the poor and ethnic minorities, founded in 1904 the first Manitoba religious community, known as "The Missionary Oblate Sisters of the Sacred Heart and of Mary Immaculate".

The Missionary Oblate Sisters' principal mandate was education and pastoral help in the parishes and missions. Today, this mandate urges the Missionary Oblate Sisters to carry on the works of education, compassion and justice in the spirit of oblation handed down by their Founder and Co-foundresses.

In the first sixty years, the Sisters served in most of the provinces in Canada. Their mission extended mainly to private, public, parochial and residential schools. Since the sixties the Missionary Oblate Sisters' field of apostolate broadened, diversified and took on daring dimensions in Canada as well as in third world countries, namely Central Africa, Haiti and Thailand in order to meet the needs of the changing times.

The Mother House was built in 1958. It houses the sisters' infirmary and the retirement home for the elderly sisters.

The Aulneau Renewal Centre which occupies the fourth floor of the Mother House offers a much needed child and family counselling service mainly for low income people.

The St. Charles Retreat Centre in West Winnipeg is a place of rest for quiet reflection, prayer and retreat.
